A Necessary Walk

I slid down the ice-slick driveway.

            Dog ran easily.

I paused at the snow-bound mailbox.

            Dog peed fitfully.

I talked to the next-door neighbor.

            Dog whined noisily.

I clocked new walk-time record.

            Dog heeled speedily.

I, exhausted.

            Dog, pooped—finally.

       Faith practiced by tailgaters through

 long stretches of no passing zones.

Tenet 1:  A vehicle twelve feet ahead will

experience no wildlife or mechanical

emergency.

Tenet 2:  Strict adherence will, however

insignificantly, reduce travel time.

Tenet 3:  Drivers going the speed limit must

be converted.
